Southcoast Health: Performing Spinal Fusion in Southeastern Massachusetts & Rhode Island
If back pain has limited your abilities and activities, the neurosurgeons at Southcoast Health are here to restore your quality of life. We are proud to offer a number of back treatments, including spinal fusion in Fall River and New Bedford, MA.
Spinal fusion, also called arthrodesis or vertebral interbody fusion, joins two vertebrae in your neck or back to stop movement between them. This helps to decrease pain or discomfort and restore full function to your spine.
Do I Need Back Surgery?
Before you have spinal fusion surgery or another back surgery, your neurosurgeon may first recommend nonsurgical treatments like physical therapy, back braces and medication. If you don’t see improvement and are still experiencing chronic back pain due to the following back problems, talk to our team at Southcoast about spinal fusion in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island:
- Vertebral fractures
- Spondylolisthesis
- Degenerated disc disease
- Scoliosis or kyphosis
- Spinal infections
- Spinal stenosis or narrowing
- Spinal tumors
Recovering from Spinal Fusion Surgery
At Southcoast Health, spinal fusion is considered neurosurgery. This procedure may be minimally invasive or an open surgery, and one of our top-ranked neurosurgeons will use a bone graft to join two vertebrae. These grafts can be synthetic or come from your own body or a cadaver, and your body will grow a new bone around the graft.
Most patients spend a few days in the hospital, and some transfer into rehabilitation. In most cases, you may not even need a brace. You will work with our multidisciplinary spine team to help with your full recovery.
