Grateful Steps: A Patient’s Journey to Walking Pain-Free Again

Janet Cromer gradually found it more and more difficult to walk comfortably and was no longer able to participate in the exercise classes she enjoyed. Finally, after non-surgical interventions just weren’t enough, she underwent a successful total knee replacement surgery performed by Joseph Lifrak, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Southcoast Health.

“As a retired medical and psychiatric registered nurse, I was most impressed with the comprehensive, wrap-around care I received throughout my experience at Southcoast Health,” Janet said.

She was so impressed that she decided to nominate everyone on her care team as Southcoast Stars through the Grateful Patient Program. Sharing her story, Janet recalled the impact each person had on her healing journey.

When she needed surgery, Joan Wildenhain, NP, provided her with clear pre-op instructions, and post-op care and guidance. Over several appointments, Joan thoroughly answered any questions Janet had and always made sure to explain her options. “I felt she took the time to understand me as a person, and not just my complex history,” said Janet.

At first, Janet was anxious about going under spinal anesthesia, but her anesthesiologist put her at ease and administered the medication skillfully. After surgery, Janet spent one night in the hospital and then returned home where she had an immediate physical therapy appointment with Scott Cook, RPT from Southcoast Health at Home. She enjoyed his combination of expertise and humor as he worked with her to prevent complications and got her moving quickly.

While she recovered, Janet spent three months in intensive out-patient physical therapy with Karen Glenn, RPT at Southcoast Health Brain & Spine. Karen always knew how to lift her spirits when necessary and guided her through a progressive regimen that led to steady improved mobility. Karen even went the extra mile and helped develop a strength and fitness program that Janet continues at her local gym.

Today, Janet is proud to share that she can walk as many miles as she wants, pain-free.

“This summer I hiked on the carriage trails of Acadia National Park with my husband,” she said. “I have also returned to Pilates and yoga classes and feel like my best 75-year-old self!”
