More than medicine: Arnoldas Giedrimas, MD, Cardiac Electrophysiology

Arnoldas Giedrimas, MD, first moved to Providence, Rhode Island 15 years ago to complete his cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology training before joining Southcoast Health.

Following in his mother’s footsteps, he knew that he wanted to pursue a career that would help change people’s lives.

“I think it was probably inevitable that I would follow her path into cardiac electrophysiology,” he says. “Now we’re able to talk about new and exciting developments and how they compare to the research she was doing in this field over 40 years ago. I was also fortunate to have some wonderful mentors along the way in my training programs at Harvard and Brown.”

While completing his studies, Dr. Giedrimas was drawn to electrophysiology by all it could offer patients, from life saving devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators to catheter-based procedures that improve their quality of life.

“I have seen tremendous progress and advances in our field over the last 15 years and I believe the pace of innovation will only continue to increase,” he says. “Additionally, the transformation of Southcoast Health during this time has been nothing short of remarkable. Southcoast Health Heart & Vascular has grown into a world-class center that offers state-of-the-art care and is a recognized regional leader. This growth in my opinion has come from a true dedication to providing excellent care to the local community.”

Since moving to the region, Dr. Giedrimas admires the incredible sense of community throughout the area. In his role at Charlton Memorial Hospital, he is proud of how Southcoast Health has been able to maintain the culture of a community-based health system through the personal care providers and staff provide to their patients each day.

“I’m honored to offer advanced health services that improve and prolong my patient’s lives. However, that is not limited to the procedures that I do,” says Dr. Giedrimas. “Providing education and improving health delivery systems is an integral part of improving the medical quality in the South Coast region. We have an amazing team of nurses, advanced practice providers, managers, administration and so many others that make my work possible. The culture of teamwork and the amazing work they do every day enables me to better care for my patients.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Giedrimas is proud that Southcoast Health Heart & Vascular remains at the forefront of innovation and implementing modern technology. With a collaborative approach, the program has participated in groundbreaking clinical trials that are making key advancements in patient care.

“The constant and rapid pace of innovation is an exciting and ongoing challenge,” he says. “At Southcoast Health we have been fortunate to participate in cases that are truly practice changing, and I am privileged to have been involved in performing some of the first in the world procedures in our field.”
