More than Medicine: Trent Ainsworth, DO, Primary Care Provider
“The more I practice medicine, the more I realize how profound an impact primary care can have on an individual’s life and the community in which they live,” says Trent Ainsworth, DO, a Family Medicine Provider at Southcoast Health.
Growing up in Westport, Dr. Ainsworth was first inspired to pursue a career in medicine while visiting the Sports Medicine and Orthopedic offices for multiple sports injuries as a teenager. Later finding that he enjoyed every clinical rotation throughout his education, he was drawn to specialize in family medicine where he could care for patients of all ages through the full spectrum of health.
“Prior to joining Southcoast, I served in the Navy as a Family Medicine physician,” said Ainsworth. “Then when transitioning out of military service, I decided that I wanted to give back to the community that raised me. The connection to this area and to the organization is the reason I am practicing in Tiverton today.”
In this role, he has the unique responsibility to help his patients achieve overall wellness and their health goals throughout all stages of life.
A key aspect of this care is not only the focus on disease management, but also on emotional and social wellbeing, including the opportunity to help others develop the social connections that motivate them to become more engaged in the community.
“I am inspired every day by the service minded nature of those we treat. In my practice, I often hear stories about those giving back, even when his or her own situation may not be ideal. Putting others before yourself is the reason many pursue a career in medicine, but since returning to the area I have found that this attitude truly extends throughout the Southcoast Health community,” he says.
One of the things that first drew Dr. Ainsworth to become a healthcare provider was the idea of lifelong learning and improvement. Today, he is grateful for the opportunity to learn from his patients, which helps him continually improve the care he provides.
