Maureen A. Chung, MD, PhD, renowned surgical oncologist, joins Southcoast Physicians Group
DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Southcoast Health today announced that Dr. Maureen Chung, a renowned surgical oncologist specializing in diseases of the breast, has joined Southcoast Physicians Group as Medical Director of their Breast Care Program.
Prior to joining Southcoast, Dr. Chung was a revered breast surgeon at Women & Infants Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital, both located in Providence, and previously served as program director of the Breast Disease Fellowship at Women & Infants Hospital. She was also on the Board of Directors of the Rhode Island Breast Cancer Coalition. Subsequently, Dr. Chung served as the director of the Margie Petersen Breast Center at Saint John’s Health Center, as well as the director of the Breast Oncology Fellowship Program and the Margie and Robert E. Petersen Breast Cancer Research Program at John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, CA.
Dr. Chung attended McGill University in Montreal, Canada, where she earned her undergraduate and master’s degree in science. She received her medical degree from McGill University and her doctorate degree from Brown University. Dr. Chung completed a general surgery residency at McGill University and a surgical oncology fellowship at Brown Medical School in Providence.
Board certified in general surgery, Dr. Chung is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Chung is also a member of numerous surgical organizations, including the Society of University Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the New England Surgical Society, the American Association for Cancer Research and the Rhode Island Medical Women’s Association.
A leader in the field of surgical oncology, Dr. Chung has published extensively in medical journals and textbooks, and has been interviewed by local, national and international media. Her clinical interests include the impact of screening mammography and contemporary surgical treatment of breast cancer. She believes that patient education, disease prevention and evidence based treatments are equally important and that care should be personalized for each patient.
