About Richard Dowd

Dr. Richard Dowd earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. He then went on to earn both his Master of Science in Clinical Investigation and his Doctor of Medicine from the New York University School of Medicine, in New York City, New York.  

He completed his Residency at the Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts and a fellowship of Neurosurgical Oncology at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. 

His philosophy of care is believing that care is a partnership between a doctor and patient. He believes that as a doctor, it is his job to help patients understand the problem at hand. Together they review all options and decide on what they feel is the best path to take. 

When not at work he enjoys spending time with his family, sailing, hiking, and playing guitar.

    Dr. Dowd was informative & answered all questions. I was shocked to learn that Rehab. center where I was sent should not have provided OT & PT until the broken neck healed. Maybe there should inservice sessions where the medical rules are explained to such agencies.Excellent highly rated facility!

    Dr Dowd is fantastic. He's never in a rush, answers all my questions, took time to meet with my spouse in the hospital and during follow-up visits, and did an unbelievably great job on my surgery. My other medical providers can't believe his great work and my quick recovery. I can't recommend Dr Dowd enough. If you need a neurosurgeon, you're in great hands with Dr Dowd.

Dr Dowd was approachable, open to listening to Understand what lead to the testing that preceded this consult. Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and  Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office.  The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
