About Michael Messina

Dr. Messina started his medical education completing a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry at Boston College. From there he furthered his medical studies at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, receiving his Doctor of Medicine. Michael completed his residency at New Hampshire Dartmouth Family Medicine in Concord.

Dr. Messina’s philosophy of care revolves around providing his patients with the best, most evidence-based care that he’s capable of providing. He strongly believes in listening to his patients and making them feel heard. Dr. Messina believes that doctors provide better medical care when they allow themselves to be human and connect with the human being in front of them.

When not at work, he spends most of his time with his family.

    I had a long wait, but I was squeezed in for my visit. I was fine with waiting especially after talking to Dr. Messina. He asked questions and so did I. He explained things so that I could understand. Very happy with Dr. Messina. A younger family member has been seeing him and he is helping him and explaining things in detail, also. I asked this person how he liked Dr. Messina and he said, "He's cool". I have to agree with that.

    My primary visit was an hour long not the usual 15 minutes that you get elsewhere. He listened and taught me a lot about my health problems and solutions as well as goals.     Mostly I like when the staff came out of the office to let us know that the doctor was behind. That was very, very helpful. And we went outside and they called us on the phone to let us know that the doctor was back in the office and talked to us respectfully.     The staff was great. It would have been helpful if the patients were notified when the provider was running late. Unfortunately he was running late however that did not impede on his care for me.     Although, Dr. Messina was running late for my appointment, I never felt as though he rushed through my visit. He took his the time to examine and ask questions and give me advice about my symptoms. He also had a student along side him and I thought he was very eager for the student to learn. There was a time during my exam that the student wasn't able to see a certain movement so Dr. Messina asked if he could show her again. I was very happy with my experience again this visit.

Southcoast Health physician profiles now feature star ratings.  Below, you’ll find frequently asked questions about our process for calculating the ratings.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and  Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office.  The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
