MidwifeAbout Maria Openshaw
Maria Openshaw is a Certified Nurse-Midwife and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. She has been practicing since 2014 and joined Southcoast OB/GYN in 2021. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin American Studies and Spanish at Bowdoin College and a Master of Science degree in Nursing and Midwifery from University of California, San Francisco. Her clinical interests include reproductive justice and health equity, global health, and family planning.
Maria started her healthcare career in pediatric research, and would review postpartum medical records as well as interview participants about their pregnancy, labor and birth. She was inspired to become a midwife to help improve the health of families, and ultimately unite the two narratives so that the patient and provider are on the same page, leading patients to be more satisfied with their care. Maria’s philosophy of care is to honor the unique experiences, preferences, and stories of every patient and family that comes under her care. She welcomes all families in her practice, including immigrant families and those who identify as LGBTQ+.
When not at work caring for her patients, Maria enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, home design, and traveling. She appreciates the historic architecture and seafood of the Southcoast.
