About John Shapiro

Dr. John Shapiro, MD, MPH completed a combined Doctorate of Medicine and Masters in Public Health program at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University. He went on to receive training in Internal medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His clinical interests include primary care, geriatric medicine, and diabetes management.

Dr. Shapiro was inspired to become an internal medicine physician because the doctor-patient relationship is so important to him. He believes he can help patients by listening to what’s wrong with them, meeting them where they are, and making recommendations specific to each unique situation.

Outside of work, Dr. Shapiro loves to spend time with his four kids, hiking, gardening, and exploring New England.

Both women were incredibly professional. And then the on sight lab Definitely the best blood draw I've ever had!!Now I can only pray that he doesn't leave the practice ! Yes I found myself of a winner !!I forgot to mention that the office is large and clean and plenty of parking .

  • Dr. Shapiro was wonderful! He attentively listen to my concerns. Discussed the issues with me and made a plan to understand and address the concerns I expressed regarding my health. I am 73 and had a great deal iof experience with various health care professionals and doctors. Dr. Shapiro is an asset to the health care profession and Southcoast.However, many of the medical staff could use better training regarding patient interpersonal relationships. They are far from being warm and fuzzy. They need to realize they really are ambassadors for Southcoast. They need to be a little more warm and fuzzy. People who are struggling with health issues want to feel as though people care and have their best interest in mind.

  • Very good visit with dr Shapiro.

  • Insufficient time was provided for an annual physical and his focus was on only 1 aspect. I had to inquire about the results of the blood tests. I was told that if I needed more time, to make an appointment because other patients were waiting. I never experienced this with my former primary care doctor who retired over a year ago.

To me this is half the battle when you know your physician is on your side and wants to help you have the best health possible. He listens to my input and makes the necessary recommendations with his knowledge and expertise. This is one of those physicians that I hope has a very long and successful practice.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and  Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office.  The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
