Compassionate volunteers wanted for Camp Angel Wings

Southcoast VNA is holding its 14th annual bereavement camp for children in July

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. — Southcoast Visiting Nurse Association, known in the community as Southcoast VNA, is seeking volunteers for its 14th annual bereavement camp, Camp Angel Wings, in July. This is a meaningful, fun-filled, two-day camp experience for children and teens, ages 6 through 15, who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The camp will be held July 15 and 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Camp Welch in Assonet.

The goal of Camp Angel Wings is to minimize the impact of a loved one’s death by offering children an opportunity to grieve alongside others with similar experiences and needs in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Children are offered a variety of traditional camp activities (swimming, crafts, games) and specialized grief expression activities (communicating grief through a painted mask, grief walk, pet therapy, guided peer discussions and a special memorial service to remember their loved ones).

Volunteer roles include co-leading a small group of children, providing assistance with grief activities, camp nurse, grief counselor and general help around camp. Preferred qualifications include previous work/volunteer experience and desire to help grieving children ages 6 to 15. Adults with personal grief experience as children are encouraged to apply. Training is provided.
