Southcoast Health’s Richard Pin, MD Recognized on Newsweek’s List of America’s Best Vascular Surgeons for 2024

Richard Pin, MD, Chief of Vascular Surgery at Southcoast Health, has been recognized on Newsweek’s List of America’s Best Vascular Surgeons for 2024.

This recognition features an exclusive group of 200 surgeons across the United States, and Dr. Pin was one of only 10 surgeons from Massachusetts to make the list.

“I’m truly honored to receive this national recognition. Over the past 10 years at Southcoast Health, I’ve had the privilege of doing what I love every day. I find it incredibly rewarding to make a difference in my patients’ lives,” said Dr. Pin. “I am also deeply grateful for the amazing team I get to work with. I could not have received this recognition without them, and I am so proud of the progress we have made at Southcoast Heart & Vascular to continuously advance patient care together.”

Vascular surgery addresses a wide range of heart and blood flow issues, treating patients with conditions like blood clots, aneurysms, blocked arteries, and varicose veins while preventing serious complications such as stroke, heart attack, or limb loss.

In collaboration with global data and business intelligence platform, Statista, Newsweek developed this list to highlight the top vascular surgeons for 2024 using physician performance data from Medicare that was gathered by clinical analytics provider CareJourney. The analysis of procedures performed was compared to the state average across specific metrics, and the list was determined based on the four key data sources below:

  • Procedure Evaluation: A thorough analysis of the procedures performed by each physician.
  • Peer Recommendations: Insights gathered from surveys completed by fellow physicians, managers, and vascular surgery professionals.
  • Quality Assessments: Participants were asked to assess the quality of care received (i.e., treatments, follow-up care, use of most recent equipment).
  • Certifications: Verification that all participating physicians have the necessary credentials and qualifications.

Dr. Pin received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia where he graduated first in his class. He completed his general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts followed by a fellowship in vascular surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

“We’re incredibly proud of Dr. Pin’s achievement which highlights the great work being done at Southcoast Health,” said Peter Cohn, MD, Chief of Southcoast Health Heart & Vascular. “Access to advanced cardiovascular care is a great advantage for our community. Providing these services in the South Coast region, allows patients the ability to focus on their health without the burden of long-distance travel. We are pleased to have some of the best providers on our team, ensuring top-quality care for our patients.”
