A Grateful Patient’s Song of Gratitude

When Jim Anderson first learned he had cancer, his instinct was to do what he spent his entire career doing – research.

In 2023, Jim was diagnosed with both essential thrombocytosis (a rare blood cancer) and an aggressive form of prostate cancer. As a molecular biologist, he delved deep into the latest research on treatment outcomes, determined to understand every aspect of his care.

This journey led him to Southcoast Health Cancer with locations in Fairhaven and Fall River. Here, he found something just as powerful as the science: a team of dedicated medical professionals who guided him through his journey with compassion, collaboration and unwavering support. His treatment was led by Tushar Kumar, MD, radiation oncologist, and Susan Kim, MD, hematologist and oncologist.

“Everyone was so kind and knowledgeable, including the clinical and support staff at the cancer center,” said Jim. “I also found solace in its calming and uplifting environment.”

Throughout his medical treatment, both he and his wife Janet valued communication and collaboration as essential parts of the process and complimented the team on prioritizing these elements of care. Jim especially appreciated the way both his doctors provided detailed information in a humane and scientific manner, always ensuring there was time for his questions and concerns.

After undergoing intensive surgery as the first step of his treatment, Jim returned to the cancer center for a rigorous regimen of daily radiation for five weeks combined with hormone therapy.

Wanting to show his deep appreciation for his care team, Jim recognized them through the Southcoast Health Grateful Patient program, awarding both of his providers a Southcoast Star. This recognition highlights the tremendous care Dr. Kumar and Dr. Kim provided throughout his journey.

An avid singer, Jim also found a unique way to celebrate his completion of a radiation treatment during his “ringing the bell” ceremony. He lifted the spirits of patients and caregivers by performing a sea shanty song which he fittingly calls “Strike the Bell.”

Today, Jim continues to pursue his hobbies of singing, rowing with the Gray Buzzards Whaleboat Team, and taking long walks to Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven with Janet and their dog Charlie.

“I’ve already started to compose lyrics to my next sea shanty to sing to the staff at my upcoming visit.”
