A Grateful Patient’s Journey of Gratitude and Recovery
When a fall in 2015 dislocated her shoulder, Lauren Cabral experienced intermittent pain for years as a lingering effect.
It was manageable until last year when another occurrence aggravated the injury, causing significant pain that wouldn’t go away.
“When I was referred to Southcoast Health I received exceptional care from the entire team, from beginning to end,” said Lauren. It’s the reason she nominated each provider on her care team as a Southcoast Star through the Grateful Patient Program.
At Southcoast Health, Lauren was first referred to orthopedic surgeon, Christopher Robertson, MD who recommended a treatment plan including surgery. “I saw five different specialists before coming here for care,” she said. “From my first appointment, Dr. Robertson was very attentive. He took the time to listen to my history, concerns and symptoms. He put my mind at ease by explaining the entire surgery and recovery process. He even went above and beyond post-surgery to assist with some post operative issues due to other medical conditions and worked on ways to decrease any side effects.”
On the day of her surgery, Triffin Psyhojos, MD, an anesthesiologist at Southcoast Health, made her feel like she was getting a “VIP experience.”
“I have had 15 surgeries and procedures under anesthesia in my life, and none have come close to the care Dr. Psyhojos provided to me on surgery day. He was so caring and genuine. It never felt like there was a rush to get to the next thing. He also made sure to have a conversation with my fiancé to prepare him and put him at ease for what to expect.”
While she was recovering, Lauren’s shoulder sling irritated her skin and caused a rash. Alison Lurvey, medical assistant, knew what to do right away and spent time finding her a replacement. “Alison took extra steps during my follow-up appointment to ensure that I was comfortable and listened and addressed each of my concerns. She was wonderful.”
Post-surgery, Lauren began her physical therapy at the Southcoast Health Rehabilitation Services, with Karen Lynn Glenn, physical therapist, and Miranda Latimer-Swift, physical therapy assistant. Together, they’ve given Lauren a support system that has allowed her to progress with each visit.
“Both Karen and Miranda are fun to work with. We get to talk as friends, and they are genuinely supportive in my recovery,” said Lauren. “It’s been a fantastic experience and they’ve made me feel seen and heard as a patient.”
Looking back on her journey, Lauren is filled with gratitude for the entire team’s expertise, encouragement and kindness.
“I’m deeply grateful for the exceptional care provided by this incredible team! They are a great reminder of how much compassion and expertise can truly make a difference in a patient’s care.”
