About John Carroll

Dr. Carroll is co-Chief of Urology for Southcoast Hospitals.

He earned his Medical Degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. He completed an internship and residencies in Surgery and Urology at New England Medical Center in Boston, where he served as chief resident in Urology.

He has special interest and expertise in urologic oncology, urolithiasis and pediatric urology and women’s incontinence. He has extensive experience in laparoscopic urology procedures.

He is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Urology at Tufts University School of Medicine where he has received an “Excellence in Teaching” award.

He is a diplomat of the American Board of Urology and a member of the American Urological Association.

My appt was for 9:40am and I arrived at 9:30. I was called in my a tech approximately 35 minutes after my appt time and waited another half hour to see the provider. I understand offices can get behind but this was more extreme than usual. What should have been a 15-20 minute annual check in turned into almost an hour and 29 minutes. If patients are booked close together it would be nice if patients at least got the heads up and knew what to expect for wait times if at all possible. Dr Carroll is worth the wait for sure but it impacted my work day negatively.

I found the staff as I entered to be friendly and knowledgeable and efficient. Upon entering the examination room, the nurse practitioner was as friendly, as efficient and as helpful. The Dr. Carroll was absolutely superb. He took time with me, he answered every single question. I teach and he was a good teacher on top of everything else. I can't say enough about my experience. And I was a little afraid and yet they made me feel not afraid. And I went out feeling hopeful and I think that every patient should feel that way even if given bad news.

On a positive note, Dr. Carroll was extremely knowledgeable, professional, obviously a very good physician and gave me some excellent advice. On a not so positive level, my appointment was at 1020, the doctor did not see me until 1120, so he was running an hour behind. And second of all, he could be a better listener, he tends to interrupt a lot and to cut the patient off in mid-sentence, so one thing that Dr. Carroll could work on is waiting until the patient has said what he or she needs to say before interrupting. But otherwise, excellent doctor, very knowledgeable, very skilled and gave some terrific advice to me.

Why does Southcoast publish survey ratings online?
Southcoast is dedicated to providing patients and consumers with helpful information about the quality of our patients’ experiences. Star ratings published on our physician biography pages are based on actual responses from patients of that particular physician to patient satisfaction surveys that are distributed and processed by a national patient satisfaction survey vendor.

Who receives the survey?
Our vendor sends surveys via SMS or email to all patients seen in our outpatient physician practices who have a valid smart phone number or email address on file with Southcoast Health. Surveys are sent to patients within a few days of their appointment.

How is the Patient Satisfaction Star Rating Calculated?
Star ratings are calculated using an average of all survey responses to each of three questions: Courtesy and Respect of Staff, Provider Overall Rating, and Willingness to Recommend Provider’s Office. The star rating displayed on our physicians’ main biography page represents the average of the three measures for that particular physician.
