Celebrating Pride Month: Jason Gendreau-Visco
Jason Gendreau-Visco (pictured right) is the Director of Emergency Services at Charlton Memorial Hospital.
Jason’s decision to join Southcoast Health in 2017 was driven by his passion for leadership and his desire to make a difference in the field of emergency medicine. Having worked as an Emergency Department (ED) nurse for most of his career, he saw an opportunity to share his knowledge, skills, and improve the environment around him.
Jason originally applied for a staff nursing position at Southcoast Health, he was offered the role of a resource nurse during his interview. “I left the interview that day thinking about the countless possibilities ahead of me,” he says.
Later, when the position of Director of Emergency Services opened up, Jason seized the chance to take on a leadership role that would allow him to continue making a positive impact. As the Director of Emergency Services, Jason’s responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks, including overseeing daily operations, managing financial aspects, and developing and enhancing policies and procedures. However, he emphasizes that the needs and well-being of his staff always remain his “top priority.”
For Jason, Pride Month holds deep significance. “Pride for us is every day,” says Jason, who views it as tribute to the courageous individuals who fought for LGBTQ+ rights and paved the way for the community’s progress. Pride goes beyond the festive parades and parties; it is about “remembering those who came before us and who fought the good fight in order for us to be where we are today.”
Nonetheless, one of Jason’s favorite memories of Pride was in 2007 when he and his husband (pictured left) celebrated in Disney World. “There was something very special about it back then,” reminisces Jason, “being surrounded by so many proud individuals and celebrating who we were in the place that meant so much to me as a child.”
To Jason, Southcoast Health’s commitment to the LGBTQ+ Welcoming and Knowledgeable project and health equity deeply resonates with him. The project allows sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) information to be collected through Epic – the health system’s electronic health records system – and provides cultural training for healthcare professionals. “This showcases Southcoast’s dedication to listening, understanding and meeting the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals,” he says.
Looking to the future, Jason aspires to continue pushing himself forward in his leadership journey, always embracing new opportunities and challenges. However, he firmly believes in living each day to the fullest, appreciating the present moment and the impact he can make in his role.
In closing, Jason’s message resonates with anyone facing struggles or difficulties. “Be proud of who you are. Do not let anyone stand in the way of your ultimate happiness,” he adds. Southcoast Health stands alongside Jason, celebrating his journey of pride and recognizing the transformative power of authenticity, acceptance, and healthcare in creating a more inclusive world.
