Dr. Theodore Schafer is a graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, IL with a degree in Biology and Pre-Medicine. After college, Dr. Schafer joined the U.S. Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer. While remaining on Active Duty, he completed his medical school at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Dr. Schafer completed both his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He then finished his fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, CA. He served in multiple leadership and clinical roles throughout the remainder of his Naval career, Including as a Department Chair and as Fellowship Program Director. Dr. Schafer spent 30 years active duty in the United States Navy and retired as Captain (O-6), Medical Corps, USN in 2015.
Dr. Schafer’s personal philosophy of care is rooted in educating patients about their condition and its management so that they can have the most successful healthcare possible. He has always been fascinated with science and biology which, combined with a desire to serve society, inspired him to become a physician.
Dr. Schafer’s clinical interests include Inflammatory Bowel Disease, colon cancer screening and biliary disease.
When not at work, Dr. Schafer enjoys reading and attending live music events.
