Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, is a time to reflect on and celebrate the rich cultural traditions, history, and accomplishments of Hispanic and Latino individuals. It is an opportunity to acknowledge the profound impact that Hispanic communities have had on various aspects of society, including the arts, sciences, business and public service.
This recognition month started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period.
Southcoast Health proudly celebrates the rich heritage, accomplishments and contributions of our Hispanic colleagues and community. This month, Southcoast employees have the opportunity to expand their awareness and broaden their appreciation of Hispanic culture through book and movie recommendations and a downloadable playlist shared by Southcoast’s Diversity Recognition Committee. Southcoast’s cafeterias will be offering a variety of authentic Hispanic cuisines, featuring traditional favorites as well as some updated classics. Additionally, we are featuring several of our colleagues as they share their stories about their heritage through their own unique perspectives and experiences.
Throughout the month, all are encouraged to engage with the storytelling, music, literature and cuisines that are part of the rich tapestry of Hispanic culture. Through engagement comes learning, a deeper respect for each other, and ultimately a better experience for us all.
